Bonjour, Paris!

✦A little Paris postcard
🇫🇷 Paris is the capital of France. France is in Europe.
🗼 The Eiffel Tower opened in 1889. It was built for a world's fair.
🌊 The Seine is a river that flows through Paris. Bridges connect its two sides.
💬 Bonjour means hello in French. Merci means thank you!

Try it: Say “Bonjour!” to someone you love.

Discover a little more about Paris

The Eiffel Tower is made from iron. Its many metal pieces are held together by rivets. A rivet is a metal fastener!

The Louvre is a large art museum in Paris. Its courtyard has a glass pyramid. A museum helps people explore art and history.

Think about it: Why might a city need bridges across a river?

Seven big land areas

Meet the seven continents.

A continent is one of Earth's very large land areas. This is a common seven-continent way of grouping them.

🦁

Africa

Home to the Sahara, a huge hot desert, and many different countries and languages.

🐧

Antarctica

A very cold continent around the South Pole. Penguins live here in the wild.

🏔️

Asia

The largest continent. Mount Everest, Earth's highest mountain above sea level, is here.

🦘

Australia

The smallest continent in this model. Australia is also the name of a country!

🗼

Europe

France and its capital, Paris, are here. So are many other countries.

🌴

North America

Includes Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and Caribbean islands such as Jamaica.

🌿

South America

Home to much of the Amazon rainforest and the long Andes mountain range.

Australia or Oceania?

These words are connected, but they don't mean exactly the same thing. Australia names a country and, in this list, a continent. Oceania is a wider region that includes Australia, New Zealand, and many Pacific islands. Some school maps label this part of the world “Oceania.” Different maps use different ways of grouping places!

Your passport to the world

Familiar continents.
Brand-new discoveries.

You explored the continents at six. At seven, let’s visit a place in each one! Open a question to check your thinking.

Africa
🇲🇬

Madagascar

An island full of surprises
  • Madagascar is an island country off Africa’s southeastern coast, in the Indian Ocean.
  • Many of its wild plants and animals are found nowhere else on Earth. Lemurs are one example.
  • Some baobab trees have wide trunks that store water.
Why is protecting Madagascar’s habitats important?

Some species live only there. If their habitat disappears, they may have nowhere else to live.

Asia
🇧🇹

Bhutan

A Himalayan mountain adventure
  • Bhutan is a country in the Himalayan mountains, between India and China.
  • Its flag has a white dragon. Bhutan is sometimes called the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
  • The famous Tiger’s Nest monastery sits on a steep cliff.
How could steep mountains make travel different?

People may need winding roads or paths, and journeys can take longer.

Europe
🇮🇸

Iceland

Fire, ice, and warm water
  • Iceland is an island country in the North Atlantic Ocean.
  • It has both volcanoes and glaciers. A glacier is a large, slowly moving mass of ice.
  • Heat from underground helps warm buildings and water. This is geothermal energy.
What does geothermal energy use?

Heat from inside the Earth.

North America
🇨🇷

Costa Rica

A rainforest discovery
  • Costa Rica is in Central America, between Nicaragua and Panama.
  • It has coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
  • Its forests are home to animals such as sloths and toucans.
Which two bodies of water border Costa Rica?

The Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

South America
🇵🇪

Peru

High mountains and ancient places
  • Peru is on South America’s western side. Its coast meets the Pacific Ocean.
  • The Andes mountains run through Peru. Alpacas are raised in the highlands.
  • Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca site in the mountains.
Name two details that show mountains matter in Peru.

The Andes run through it, alpacas live in its highlands, and Machu Picchu is in the mountains.

Australia
🇦🇺

Australia

One name, two meanings
  • Australia is both a country name and the continent name in our seven-continent list.
  • Kangaroos and wombats are marsupials. Their young continue growing in a pouch.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have many distinct cultures and long histories connected to the land.
Why can the word Australia be confusing on a map?

It can name a country or a continent.

Antarctica
🐧

An icy expedition

A continent with no countries
  • Antarctica surrounds the South Pole and has no sovereign countries.
  • Researchers from different countries work at scientific stations.
  • Scientists study ice, weather, wildlife, and how Earth is changing.
Why do people go to Antarctica to work?

They go to do scientific research, including studying ice, weather, and wildlife.

Oceania bonus · A place we studied together

🇳🇷 Hello again, Nauru!

Nauru is a tiny island country in the Pacific Ocean, just south of the equator. It belongs to Micronesia, a region within Oceania. It is a separate country from Australia.

  • Its land area is about 21 square kilometres.
  • It has no official capital. Government offices are in the district of Yaren.
  • The flag’s yellow line represents the equator. The white star sits below it, showing Nauru’s position south of the equator.
  • The star has 12 points, representing Nauru’s original tribes.
How does the flag tell us where Nauru is?

The yellow line stands for the equator, and the star below it shows that Nauru lies south of the equator.

Write like a reading detective: Explain that answer in a paragraph using two details from the flag.

Your birthday number

Seven is full of surprises!

7 days in a week7 continents in our list7 is a prime number

A prime number has just two positive whole-number factors: 1 and itself. Seven can be split into one group of seven or seven groups of one.

Rainbows are often described using seven color names: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. In a real rainbow, the colors blend smoothly together.

Birthday challenge: Can you name seven things that make you smile?

A name with a flowing story

Jordyn, meet your name.

Jordyn is a spelling variation of Jordan. The name comes from the Jordan River. Its Hebrew roots carry the meaning “to descend” or “flow down,” like a river flowing toward lower ground.

The Jordan River is also part of the Bible's story: it is the river where Jesus was baptized.

Your nickname is Jordy. Your initials spell JAM. And the story you make with your name is yours to create.

Two things Jordy loves to practice

Twirl, stretch, and shine!

Jordy is learning ballet and gymnastics. Every practice is a chance to try, learn, and grow.

🩰

Ballet

Music, movement, and graceful dancing. Small steps can become a beautiful dance!

🤸

Gymnastics

Balance, strength, and movement. Practice with your coach helps you build your skills.

A little reminder for Jordy: You don't have to get it right the first time. Keep practicing, listen to your teachers, and enjoy learning!

The Ribbon Surprise

Jordy was getting ready for a pretend ballet show. She had a pink ribbon, but her friend Mia had none. Jordy found a longer ribbon in the craft box. She asked a grown-up to help cut it into two pieces.

Jordy gave one piece to Mia. They tied their ribbons and practiced together. When Mia forgot a step, Jordy slowed down and tried it with her again. By the end, both friends were smiling.

Why did Jordy share the ribbon and slow down? How do you know?

My paragraph checklist
  • Restate the question.
